Drummer and guitar player are currently writing and turning down gigs because we need a bass player. We are experienced musicians that are drama free, responsible adults with a rehearsal space and are looking for a like-minded bass player. The style of music we are working towards is metal/doom with a Kyuss, High on Fire, Sleep, Clutch and Weedeater kind of feel. Knowledge in the genre is a plus but not mandatory. Concerts in the Plaza: The Zongo Allstars will take the stage at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo at 5:30 p.m. with high energy, “CalCubano” dance music, which is what the band calls its unique blend of Afro-Latin, Afro’Caribbean, Funk, Reggae and Calypso. Guitars, drums, saxophones, flutes … you name it, the Zongo Allstars are bringing it!

Concerts in the Park: Tonight’s Concert in the Park in Paso Robles kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the City Park gazebo and features music by Oasis. Not to be confused with the British rock band (are they even together this week?), SLO County’s very own Oasis is a full, 7-piece band delighting crowds with everything from Big Band to Big Chill to contemporary hits.

Avila Beach Fish & Farmers Market: The Tipsy Gypsies will entertain the crowd at the Avila Beach Promenade starting at 4 p.m. The Tipsy Gypsies characterize their music as a cross between Gypsy Jazz and Pop Music, rooted in Gypsy Jazz, like Django Reinhardt, and inspired by Billie Holiday, but updated with modern influences. Don’t be surprised to hear covers from bands as diverse as the Velvet Underground, Portishead and the Beatles, all played in a gypsy jazz style.

Petty vs. the Red Hot Chili Peppers
This is a fun little .mp3 download that compares Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dani California.” When the Peppers’ song was released, there was some controversy as to whether it was a rip-off of Petty’s song. Both songs were produced by Rick Rubin. But I personally think Tom Petty himself summed it up best when he said during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, “I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. This amazing young man has played with artists including the Gin Blossoms and John Anderson from “Yes” – his music past is one to be proud of, his future is bright as can be, and his present isn’t looking too shabby either!

I love this video featuring Chase’s rendition of the Kings of Leon hit “Use Somebody” – Chase’s fun, upbeat version of the song is amazing. The Decca remix of the song is fabulous as well and is available as a free download on Chase’s website, but I also enjoy Chase’s video with its “history of dance” theme. (I subscribed to Chase Emery’s YouTube channel (a couple of years ago after featuring one of his videos on the musicians’ exchange MySpace page – his videos are artistic and engaging.)
